MaTh activity Thursday: Common Core

Today I wanted to talk about Common Core--it's on every teacher's mind, right?  I had made a freebie a while back (in July) and I had plans to make more like it, but then life got in the way and I haven't had a chance to get to those math inference packets (sigh).

I would love to hear if you would like to see more of this type of math inference scenario.

  • Mrs. Potts has triplets, Jill, Jack, and James.  On their first day of Kindergarten she tied each of their shoes and hoped they would learn how to tie their own shoes soon.  Jill learned quickly and was tying her shoes by Halloween.  James was tying his shoes by New Years.  Jack finally learned on April Fools Day, 5 days after his birthday.

The scenario is open ended so the kids think of the questions to ask and figure out the correct answers.  How many questions can you think of for the triplets scenario?

So far it has been downloaded about 185 times, but nobody has given a review.  If you try it in your classroom, please let me know how it goes.  In the mean time I will be continuing to try and get a packet done for each grade level.  Hopefully I can get it done before the end of the school year.

My plan for the following Math activity Thursdays are to use a Common Core Math Standard each week, so look at the schedule and it will be posted.

I am super excited to have a guest blog post this Saturday.  It is a third grade math post with a Halloween theme from 2 Smart Wenches!  My November and December are still open, so if anyone wants to do a 4th or 5th grade math post, let me know.

Now it's your turn to link up with MaTh!

  1. Congrats on your quest spot, hope that goes well for you. Love the tying shoe thing, kids won't initially think they're doing math which is always a plus. Kids always learn best when things are fun and they don't think..."they're learning". Haven't been around much lately so am trying to catch up with everyone today.
